Unit 1- The Nature of Science

Steps of the Scientific Method
1. State the scientific problem/question
2. Research the problem
3. Propose a hypothesis
4. Perform a controlled experiment w only one variable
·      Control - factors that do not change in the experiment
·      Variable
I.              Independent – the factor that changes throughout the course of the experiment
II.           Dependent – the way to measure changes in the independent variable
5. Collect data
6. State a conclusion

Eight Characteristics of All Living Things
1.   Cells – The building blocks of life
2.   Food/ Energy – Whether you get it from your environment or make your own, all living things get energy from glucose
3.   Reproduction - Whether it be sexual or asexual
4. Growth/Development – Development are the changes that accompany growth
5. Evolution/ Adaptation
- Evolution – Changes over time
- Adaptation – A genetic change that allows organisms to survive and reproduce
6. Homeostasis
- The maintenance of a constant eternal environment
7. Reactions or Response to Stimulus
- Response to stimulus or changes in the environment
8. DNA
- The genetic material for life
